How to use the PDF Page Numbers

  1. Choose your PDF.
  2. Pick a position and format such as 'Page 1 of 10'.
  3. Set the font size, starting number and pages to skip.
  4. Click Add page numbers and download.

Why number pages?

Numbered pages make long documents easy to navigate and reference: “see page 14” in a project report, thesis, tender, legal bundle or merged set of certificates. Many institutions require page numbers on submissions, and courts and government offices expect them on bundles of documents.

Formats and positions

  • 1, 2, 3: simple and clean for reports.
  • Page 1 or Page 1 of 10: clearer for official submissions; “of 10” shows nothing is missing.
  • 1 / 10 and - 1 -: compact styles for presentations and booklets.

Bottom centre is the most common position; bottom right suits reports; top right is traditional for legal documents.

Skipping covers and starting numbers

If your first page is a cover or title page, skip it and start numbering from 1 on the next page. The “of total” count then excludes skipped pages. You can also start from any number, useful when a document continues from an earlier part.

Workflow tips

Merge all parts first with merge PDF and remove unwanted pages with organize PDF, then add numbers so they run continuously. If the result is too large for a portal, compress it with compress PDF. To stamp text like “CONFIDENTIAL” instead, use watermark PDF.

Private

Numbers are added in your browser; your document is never uploaded. Text in the original remains selectable.

Quick answers

Helvetica, a clean standard font, in dark grey. Can I choose a larger number for printing? Yes, set the font size up to 40 pt. Can numbers start at 0? Yes, set the start number to 0 or any number you like.

Frequently asked questions

How do I skip the cover page?
Set 'Skip first pages' to 1. Numbering starts on page 2 as number 1 unless you change the start number.
Can I use 'Page 1 of 10' format?
Yes. Choose it from the Format list.
Will page numbers overlap existing text?
They're placed about 1 cm from the edge. If your document has text there, try another position.
Can I number in Hindi?
Standard PDF fonts support Latin characters only, so numbers use English digits.
