Barcode Generator
Create printable barcodes for products, labels and inventory in common formats like Code 128 and EAN-13.
How to use the Barcode
- Choose the barcode type.
- Enter the value; EAN and UPC check digits are added automatically.
- Adjust bar height and whether to show the number underneath.
- Download as SVG for printing or PNG for documents.
Choosing a barcode type
| Type | Use |
|---|---|
| Code 128 | Inventory, shipping labels, asset tags; letters and numbers |
| EAN-13 | Retail products sold in India and most countries |
| EAN-8 | Small retail packages |
| UPC-A | Retail products in the US and Canada |
| Code 39 | Older industrial and government systems |
| ITF-14 | Outer cartons and cases of products |
For internal use (stock, library books, equipment), Code 128 is the most flexible. Retail barcodes must follow GS1 standards.
Retail barcodes need GS1 numbers
To sell products in supermarkets and on major marketplaces, your EAN or UPC numbers must be allotted to your company by GS1 India. Making up EAN numbers can clash with other products and get listings rejected. Once you have GS1 numbers, you can generate the barcode images here.
Printing tips
- Print in black on white; coloured or low-contrast barcodes often fail to scan.
- Don’t squeeze the width; keep the quiet zone (blank space) on both sides.
- Use SVG for label software and printers so bars stay perfectly sharp.
- Test with a scanner or phone app before printing a large batch.
Check digits
EAN and UPC codes include a check digit that scanners use to catch errors. Enter 12 digits for EAN-13 (or 11 for UPC-A) and the tool calculates the last digit. If you enter all digits and the check digit is wrong, you’ll see an error.
QR codes
For links and payments, QR codes hold more data: see the QR code generator and UPI QR. Barcodes are generated in your browser.
Quick answers
How do I print barcode labels? Place the SVG in label design software or a document, sized to your labels, and print on a laser printer for crisp bars. Can phones scan these? Yes, most barcode scanner apps and many phone cameras read Code 128 and EAN-13.
Keep a spreadsheet of the values you use so every product or asset has a unique code.
