How to use the In-Hand Salary

- Adjust basic %, HRA % and whether employer PF and gratuity are part of CTC.
- Add rent paid and old-regime investments if you have them.
- Compare monthly in-hand pay under the new and old regimes.
CTC is not what you take home
Cost to Company (CTC) is everything your employer spends on you in a year. Part of it never reaches your bank account: the employer’s PF contribution goes to your EPF account, gratuity is set aside for when you leave, and some allowances may be reimbursements. From the gross salary that is paid, your own PF contribution, professional tax and income tax (TDS) are deducted. What’s left is in-hand salary.
How this calculator works
- Basic salary is a percentage of CTC, commonly 40–50%.
- Employer PF is 12% of basic (or of ₹15,000 if your company caps PF at the wage ceiling). If it’s part of CTC, it’s subtracted to get gross salary.
- Gratuity of 4.81% of basic is subtracted if your CTC includes it.
- Gross salary is split into basic, HRA and a special allowance.
- Deductions: employee PF (12% of basic), professional tax, and income tax calculated under both regimes using the current slabs.
New or old tax regime?
The new regime has lower slab rates, a higher standard deduction and a large rebate, but almost no deductions. The old regime allows HRA exemption, 80C, 80D, home loan interest and more. If you pay significant rent, invest the full 80C limit and have a home loan, the old regime can still win; otherwise the new regime usually gives higher take-home pay. The calculator highlights whichever is better for your inputs. For a detailed component table, use the CTC breakup calculator; for tax only, the income tax calculator.
Why your payslip may differ
- Employers deduct TDS based on your declared regime and investments, spread across the year.
- Professional tax varies by state (₹2,500 a year is common; some states don’t levy it).
- Variable pay, bonuses, meal cards, NPS and reimbursements change the structure.
- Tax rules change with each Budget; the calculator shows the financial year it uses.
Treat the result as an estimate and check your offer letter and payslips.
