How to use the Number to Words

  1. Type the number or amount, with or without commas.
  2. Read it in words in the Indian system.
  3. Copy the cheque-style text, e.g. 'Rupees … Only'.

Amount in words, Indian style

Cheques, invoices, receipts, demand drafts, bank forms and legal documents need the amount written in words. In India this uses the lakh and crore system: 1,20,000 is “One Lakh Twenty Thousand”, not “One Hundred Twenty Thousand”. This converter gets the grouping right every time, including paise.

Writing a cheque correctly

  • Start with “Rupees” and end with “Only”, with no gaps, to prevent tampering.
  • Write paise as “and Fifty Paise”.
  • Draw a line through any empty space after “Only”.
  • Make sure the figures in the box match the words exactly; banks can reject mismatched cheques.

Indian vs international grouping

The result also shows the number with Indian and international comma placement.

Where else it helps

GST invoices usually include the total in words; our invoice generator and rent receipt generator add it automatically. To convert between lakh/crore and million/billion, use the lakh–crore converter.

Quick answers

Should I use “and” before the last number? Indian cheques usually don’t, except before paise. Can I write in capital letters? Yes, banks accept both.

Why cheques need words

Banks treat the amount in words as the primary record. If the figures and words don’t match, the cheque is usually returned. Writing words correctly in the Indian system, with lakh and crore, avoids that delay and protects against someone altering the figures. The converter handles amounts up to hundreds of lakh crore, with paise rounded to two decimal places.
