Photo and signature for PAN applications
New PAN applications (Form 49A for Indian citizens) and PAN correction requests can be made online through the Protean (formerly NSDL) and UTIITSL portals. When you choose to upload scanned documents instead of using Aadhaar e-KYC, you upload a photograph and signature in a specified size, resolution and file size. The PAN card itself prints your photo and signature from these files, so clarity matters.
Our PAN preset
The preset reflects physical sizes published by the Protean portal: a photo about 3.5 × 2.5 cm and a signature about 2 × 4.5 cm, at 300 DPI, JPG, under 50 KB. That works out to roughly 295 × 413 pixels for the photo and 531 × 236 for the signature. Portal requirements do change, and UTIITSL may differ, so compare with the instructions on the portal you’re using. The requirements box shows the last-verified date.
Tips for a clean PAN card
- Photo: recent colour photo, white background, face clearly visible, no caps or dark glasses.
- Signature: sign on white paper with a black pen, inside a wide box. The tool whitens the paper so the signature prints cleanly.
- Consistency: use the same signature style as on your bank records; mismatched signatures can cause trouble later.
Aadhaar e-KYC option
If you apply using Aadhaar-based e-KYC, the photo may be taken from Aadhaar records and a scanned signature may not be needed. Instant e-PAN via the Income Tax e-filing portal also uses Aadhaar. Use this tool when you choose the scanned-image route or need to update your photo or signature.
Private
Images are processed in your browser and never uploaded to our servers. For other forms, the exam resizer and signature resizer offer more presets.
After applying
Track your PAN application with the acknowledgement number on the portal you used, and download the e-PAN once issued.
