How to use the Split Bill

  1. Enter the bill amount, tax or service charge, and tip.
  2. Choose to split equally or by shares.
  3. Add everyone's names (and shares, if used).
  4. See each person's amount, rounded to the paisa.

Split fairly, without arguments

Group dinners, trips, flat expenses and office parties often end with someone doing awkward maths on a phone calculator. This tool splits the total, including taxes and tip, accurately to the paisa, so everyone pays their fair share.

Equal or by shares

  • Equally: everyone pays the same, the simplest option for shared meals.
  • By shares: give each person a weight. A couple can have 2 shares, a child 0.5, or someone who only had drinks a smaller share. Each person pays in proportion to their shares.

Tax, service charge and tip

Restaurant bills in India include GST (commonly 5% for most restaurants) and sometimes a service charge. Guidelines from the consumer protection authority say service charge is voluntary and shouldn’t be added by default; you can ask for it to be removed. Tipping is optional; enter a percentage if you want to add one.

Every paisa accounted for

Dividing ₹1,000 by three gives ₹333.333…, which can’t be paid exactly. The calculator rounds each share down to the paisa and adds the leftover paisa to the first person, so the shares add up to exactly the total.

Collect with UPI

The person who paid can share a UPI QR code with each person’s amount, or use their UPI app’s split feature. For trip fuel costs, see the fuel cost calculator.

Examples

  • Dinner for four: ₹2,400 with 5% GST = ₹2,520, or ₹630 each.
  • Trip with a couple and two singles: split by shares 2, 1, 1, so the couple pays half.
  • Birthday treat where one person doesn’t pay: remove them from the list, or give them a share of 0.

Add everyone’s name to share a clear list of who owes what.

Tip: settle up the same day while everyone remembers. UPI makes collecting each share quick and traceable.
