What is an IFSC code?

The Indian Financial System Code (IFSC) is an 11-character code that identifies a bank branch for electronic transfers such as NEFT, RTGS and IMPS. The first four letters are the bank code, the fifth character is always zero, and the last six characters identify the branch. For example, in SBIN0001234, โ€œSBINโ€ is State Bank of India and โ€œ001234โ€ is the branch.

You need the IFSC when you add a beneficiary for a bank transfer, set up salary credit, or fill in forms for scholarships and government benefits. It is printed on your cheque book and passbook. The MICR code, printed at the bottom of cheques, identifies the branch for cheque clearing.
