Percentages made simple

Percent means “per hundred”. Most everyday questions come down to one of a few formulas, which this page solves for you:

  • X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y. For example, 15% of 2,000 = 300.
  • X is what % of Y = X ÷ Y × 100. For example, 300 of 2,000 = 15%.
  • Percentage change = (new − old) ÷ old × 100. From 800 to 1,000 is a 25% increase.
  • Discount: price after discount = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100).
  • Profit margin = profit ÷ selling price × 100; markup = profit ÷ cost × 100.

Margin vs markup

These are often confused. If you buy at ₹700 and sell at ₹1,000, profit is ₹300. Margin is 30% (₹300 of ₹1,000), while markup is about 42.9% (₹300 on ₹700). Shopkeepers usually price by markup; businesses report margin.

Common traps

  • A 20% fall followed by a 20% rise doesn’t get you back where you started: 100 → 80 → 96.
  • Two discounts don’t add up: 20% off then 10% off is 28% off, not 30%.
  • Percentage points differ from percent: a rate going from 7% to 8% is up 1 percentage point, or about 14.3%.

Quick answers

How do I find the original price before a discount? Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100): ₹800 after 20% off was ₹1,000. How do I add 18% to a price? Multiply by 1.18, or use the GST calculator for the tax split. How do I calculate percentage change in salary? Use the increase card with old and new salary.
