How to use the Remove Photo Background

  1. Choose a photo of yourself (front-facing, shoulders visible works best).
  2. Wait a few seconds while the background is detected and removed on your device.
  3. Pick white, light blue, a custom colour or a transparent background.
  4. Adjust edge strictness, or use the Erase and Restore brushes to fix any spot by hand.
  5. Download the finished photo as a JPG, or a PNG with a transparent background.

Why forms ask for a plain background

Passport applications, SSC, UPSC, IBPS, NEET and most government job portals ask for a recent photo with a plain white or light-coloured background. A photo taken at home usually has walls, doors or furniture behind you, and portals or verification officers can reject it. Visiting a studio just to change the background costs time and money; this tool does it in seconds on your phone.

How it works

The tool uses a small AI model that recognises people in a photo and marks every pixel as person or background. Everything outside the person is removed and replaced with the colour you choose. The model runs inside your browser, so your photo is never uploaded to any server. The first time you use it, your browser downloads the AI engine, which takes a few seconds; after that it is cached and much faster.

Tips for the best result

  • Face the camera with your head and shoulders in the frame, the way a passport photo is taken.
  • Use even light. Stand facing a window; strong shadows behind you can confuse the edges.
  • Contrast helps. A background that is a different colour from your hair and clothes gives cleaner edges.
  • Edge strictness: move it right if patches of the old background remain around your head, and left if hair or shoulders are being cut away.
  • Touch up by hand: the Erase brush removes any leftover patch, and the Restore brush paints back parts of you that were removed. In Restore mode the removed areas appear faintly so you can see where to paint.

Which background colour to choose

Choose white for Indian passports, most exam forms and PAN card photos. Some forms and ID cards ask for light blue; use the custom colour picker for anything else, such as the red backgrounds some university ID cards use. Choose transparent to get a PNG you can place on your own designs, resumes or presentations.

After removing the background

Forms also have strict size rules. Use the passport size photo maker to crop to 35×45 mm, or the exam photo resizer to hit the exact pixels and KB for SSC, UPSC, IBPS and other exams. To bring the file under a KB limit, use resize image in KB. For a signature on paper, the signature background remover works better, because it is tuned for ink rather than people.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The background is removed by an AI model that runs inside your browser. Your photo never leaves your phone or computer.
Does it work on photos without people?
It is designed for photos of people, such as passport, exam and profile photos. Products, animals or objects may not be detected correctly.
Why is it slow the first time?
Your browser downloads the AI engine once, which takes a few seconds on mobile data. After that it is cached and the tool runs much faster.
Which background colour is right for a passport photo?
Indian passport photos need a plain white background. Choose White, then crop the photo to 35×45 mm with the passport size photo maker.
Part of my hair was cut off. What can I do?
Move the edge strictness slider to the left to keep more of the edges. A photo against a plain, contrasting wall also gives cleaner results.
Can I get a transparent PNG?
Yes. Choose Transparent as the background and download the PNG.
Can I fix spots the AI got wrong?
Yes. Choose Erase and paint over leftover background, or choose Restore and paint over parts that were removed by mistake. Undo reverses your last stroke.
