How PIN codes work

A PIN (Postal Index Number) is the 6-digit code India Post uses to sort mail. The first digit is the postal region, the first two digits the postal circle (usually a state), the first three the sorting district, and the last three the delivery post office. One PIN code often covers several post offices: a head or sub office that delivers mail, and smaller branch offices in nearby villages.

You need the correct PIN code for couriers and parcels, online shopping addresses, bank and government forms, and Aadhaar or passport address updates.
