Fuel & Trip Cost Calculator

Work out the fuel cost of a trip from distance, mileage and fuel price, and split it between travellers.

How to use the Fuel Cost

  1. Enter the one-way distance and tick 'Return trip' if needed.
  2. Enter your vehicle's mileage (km per litre) and the fuel price.
  3. Add tolls and parking, and the number of people sharing.
  4. Read the total cost, fuel needed and cost per person.

Plan your road trip budget

Whether it’s a weekend drive, a family trip to your hometown, a daily office commute or a shared ride with friends, knowing the fuel cost upfront helps you budget and split expenses fairly.

The calculation

  • Fuel needed = distance ÷ mileage. 600 km at 15 km/l needs 40 litres.
  • Fuel cost = litres × price per litre.
  • Total = fuel cost + tolls and parking.
  • Per person = total ÷ number of people.

Getting mileage right

Real-world mileage is usually lower than the figure in brochures. City driving, AC use, heavy loads, roof carriers and high speeds all reduce it; steady highway driving at moderate speeds improves it. If you track fill-ups, divide kilometres driven by litres filled for your true mileage.

Fuel prices

Petrol and diesel prices differ by state because of VAT, and change from time to time. Enter the price at your local pump for the best estimate. For long trips across states, use an average.

Tolls

National highway tolls are paid via FASTag. Add the expected tolls for your route; navigation apps often show estimates. Return journeys within 24 hours sometimes get a discount at the same plaza.

Electric vehicles

For an EV, enter km per kWh as “mileage” and the electricity cost per unit as “fuel price” to estimate charging cost. See also the electricity bill calculator. To split other shared costs like food and hotels, use the split bill calculator.

Example

Delhi to Jaipur and back is roughly 560 km. In a car giving 15 km/l with petrol at ₹95, you need about 37 litres costing around ₹3,550. Add tolls of perhaps ₹700 for the round trip, and the total is about ₹4,250, or roughly ₹1,060 each for four people.

Tip: check tyre pressure before long trips to improve mileage.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate petrol cost for a trip?
Divide distance by mileage to get litres, then multiply by the fuel price.
What mileage should I use?
Your real-world mileage, usually lower than the brochure figure.
Can I split the cost among friends?
Yes. Enter the number of people sharing.
