When to crop
Cropping removes distractions and changes the shape of a photo. It is the first step for many tasks: cutting a passport-style head-and-shoulders shot from a group photo, squaring a picture for a profile or WhatsApp DP, trimming a scanned document to the paper, or fitting a banner to 16:9 for YouTube thumbnails and presentations.
Picking an aspect ratio
| Ratio | Good for |
|---|---|
| 1:1 | Profile pictures, Instagram posts, WhatsApp DP |
| 4:3 / 3:4 | Standard photos, presentations |
| 16:9 / 9:16 | Thumbnails, desktop wallpapers, stories and reels |
| 3.5×4.5 cm | Indian passport and exam photos |
| Original | Trimming edges while keeping the photo’s shape |
Choose Custom to type any ratio, such as 2:3 for prints.
How to frame well
- Use the rule-of-thirds grid: place eyes on the upper third line for portraits.
- Leave a little space in the direction a person is looking.
- For documents, keep a thin margin around the paper so no text is cut.
- Keyboard users can move the frame with arrow keys and zoom with + and −.
Quality after cropping
Cropping keeps the original pixels in the selected area. There is no stretching, and the output keeps your original format (JPG, PNG or WebP). The crop size in pixels is shown before you download. If you need exact pixel or centimetre dimensions afterwards, use the image resizer; for a KB limit, the KB resizer.

Cropping for specific uses
- WhatsApp DP: square 1:1, keep your face in the centre because WhatsApp shows it in a circle.
- YouTube thumbnail: 16:9, then resize to 1280 × 720 pixels.
- Instagram portrait post: 4:5 (use Custom with 4 and 5).
- Exam photo: 3.5×4.5 cm ratio, then use the exam resizer for exact pixels and KB.
