  4. See the maturity value at 21 years from opening and the yearly table.

What is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana?

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government savings scheme for a girl child, launched under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign. Parents or guardians can open an account at a post office or authorised bank for a daughter below 10 years of age. It typically offers one of the highest interest rates among small savings schemes, set by the government every quarter.

Key rules

  • Deposit between ₹250 and ₹1.5 lakh per financial year.
  • Deposits are made for 15 years from opening; the account matures 21 years after opening.
  • Between years 15 and 21, the balance keeps earning interest without further deposits.
  • Up to 50% of the previous year’s balance can be withdrawn after the girl turns 18, for higher education.
  • Premature closure is allowed for her marriage after 18, and in some other cases.
  • Maximum two accounts per family (more for twins or triplets).

Tax benefits

SSY has EEE status: deposits qualify for 80C in the old regime, and both interest and maturity are tax-free.

How the calculator works

It assumes you deposit the same amount at the start of each year for 15 years, and that the rate stays constant until maturity at year 21. The rate is stored in our admin config; the government revises it quarterly, so check the latest notified rate. Depositing early in the financial year, before 5 April, maximises interest.

Planning for her future

SSY is well suited to long-term education and marriage goals because it’s safe and tax-free. Many families combine it with equity mutual funds for growth; see the SIP calculator. For your own long-term savings, compare PPF. Estimates only.

Quick answer

What if I miss a year’s minimum deposit? The account becomes inactive and can be revived by paying the minimum for each missed year plus a small penalty.
