What a GST tax invoice must include
Under GST invoice rules, a registered supplier’s tax invoice generally includes:
- Supplier’s name, address and GSTIN.
- A unique, consecutive invoice number and the date of issue.
- Recipient’s name, address and GSTIN (if registered).
- Place of supply and state.
- Description of goods or services with HSN or SAC codes.
- Quantity, rate, taxable value, GST rate and tax amounts (CGST, SGST/UTGST or IGST).
- Total invoice value, often also in words, and the supplier’s signature.
This generator lays out all of these automatically.
CGST + SGST or IGST?
When the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state, GST is split equally into CGST and SGST. When they are in different states, the full rate is charged as IGST. Choose the seller’s and buyer’s states and the invoice applies the correct split, grouped by GST rate.
HSN and SAC codes
HSN codes classify goods and SAC codes classify services. The number of digits required on invoices depends on your turnover. Look up codes on the GST portal and use the rate notified for each code. GST rates were rationalised in September 2025, so check the current rate.
Not registered for GST?
Untick “GST invoice” to create a simple invoice without tax. Businesses below the registration threshold or under composition have different rules; composition dealers issue a bill of supply without charging GST.
