Typing Speed Test
Measure your English or Hindi typing speed in words per minute, with accuracy and error count.
How to use the Typing Test
- Choose English or Hindi and a duration: 1, 2 or 5 minutes.
- Start typing the passage; the timer starts on your first key.
- Watch mistakes highlighted as you type.
- See your WPM, accuracy and errors when time runs out.
How typing speed is measured
Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), where a “word” is standardised as 5 characters including spaces. This test counts correctly typed characters, divides by 5, and divides by the minutes elapsed. Accuracy is the share of typed characters that match the passage. Pasting is disabled so results reflect real typing.
Speeds required in exams
Many government recruitment exams include a typing or skill test. Requirements vary by post and notification, for example SSC CHSL’s data entry and LDC tests, court clerk tests, and state-level clerk exams. Common benchmarks are 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi for clerical posts, and higher for data entry. Always check your notification for the exact speed, duration and whether errors are penalised.
Hindi typing
This test accepts Unicode Hindi, typed with an Inscript, phonetic or Remington layout through your system or phone keyboard. Some exams require the Kruti Dev font with the Remington layout, or Mangal with Inscript; practise with the layout your exam uses. The Kruti Dev converter helps with Kruti Dev material.
How to improve
- Learn touch typing: fingers on the home row, eyes on the screen.
- Prioritise accuracy; speed follows. Many exams deduct marks for errors.
- Practise 15–20 minutes daily rather than long, irregular sessions.
- Take the test at the same duration as your exam to build stamina.
