Why convert CGPA to percentage?
Many universities grade on a 10-point CGPA scale, but job applications, government exams, scholarships and foreign universities often ask for a percentage. The conversion isn’t universal: different boards and universities publish different formulas, and using the wrong one can misstate your score.
Common formulas
- CBSE (and many general uses): percentage = CGPA × 9.5. CBSE derived 9.5 from the average performance of top students.
- CGPA × 10: used by some institutions and often as a rough estimate.
- VTU and AKTU: percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
- Mumbai University: percentage = 7.1 × CGPA + 11 (for its 10-point scale).
These formulas are stored in our admin config and can be updated. Your mark sheet, transcript or university ordinance is the authority: many print the conversion formula on the back.
Example
A CGPA of 8.0 becomes 76% by the CBSE formula, 72.5% by VTU’s formula and about 67.8% by Mumbai University’s. That spread is exactly why using the right formula matters.
SGPA vs CGPA
SGPA is the grade point average for one semester. CGPA is the cumulative average across all semesters, usually weighted by credits. Most applications ask for CGPA or the equivalent aggregate percentage.
When applying
- If a form asks for a percentage and your university has an official formula, use it and keep the proof.
- If there is no official formula, some employers accept CGPA × 10 or ask you to state the CGPA directly.
- Foreign universities often use credential evaluation services such as WES instead of formulas.
For raw marks, use the marks percentage calculator; to track attendance, the attendance calculator.
Quick answer
Is SGPA converted the same way? Usually yes, with the same formula as CGPA, unless your university states otherwise.
Keep a copy of your university’s official conversion letter or ordinance with your application documents.
