How to use the Text to Speech

  1. Type or paste your text.
  2. Choose a voice; Hindi and Indian English voices are listed first.
  3. Set the speed.
  4. Press Speak, and pause, resume or stop as needed.

Listen instead of reading

Text to speech helps you proofread your own writing (you hear mistakes your eyes skip), learn pronunciation, listen to long articles while doing something else, and makes text accessible for people with low vision or reading difficulties. It is also useful for language learners practising Hindi or English.

Voices come from your device

This tool uses the speech engine built into your browser and operating system, so there’s nothing to install and your text isn’t sent to us. The voices available depend on your device:

  • Android and Chrome usually include Hindi (hi-IN) and Indian English voices.
  • Microsoft Edge offers natural-sounding online voices, including Hindi.
  • iPhone and Mac include Indian English voices; Hindi voices can be downloaded in the system’s accessibility or spoken content settings.

If you type Hindi and no Hindi voice is selected, the tool asks the browser for a Hindi voice automatically.

Tips for natural speech

  • Use punctuation: commas and full stops create natural pauses.
  • Write numbers the way they should be read if pronunciation matters.
  • A speed of 0.9–1.1× sounds most natural; slow down for learning.
  • Very long texts may be cut off by some browsers; read in sections.

Type Hindi first

Need Hindi text to listen to? Type it phonetically with the Hindi typing tool, or convert legacy text with the Kruti Dev converter. To time your reading, see the word counter.

Examples of use

  • Proofread an essay or cover letter by listening for awkward sentences.
  • Practise the pronunciation of English words for interviews.
  • Help grandparents listen to messages or news in Hindi.
  • Listen to study notes while travelling.

For the most natural results, try each available voice; quality varies a lot between devices.

Tip: if no voices appear, reload the page; some browsers load their voice list only after a moment.
