Tip Calculator
Work out the tip, the total and what each person owes, in a couple of taps.
How to use the Tip Calculator
- Enter the bill amount; your currency is picked automatically.
- Tap a tip percentage or type your own.
- Enter how many people are sharing the bill.
- Turn on round-up if you want each share to be a whole amount.
How much should you tip?
Tipping customs vary a lot by country. In the United States, 15–20% is standard for sit-down restaurant service, with 18–20% common in cities, and many people tip around 10–15% for bar or delivery service. In the UK and much of Europe a service charge of 10–12.5% is often already on the bill; if it isn't, rounding up or leaving about 10% is typical. In Japan tipping is generally not expected. In India, a 5–10% tip is common where no service charge is added.
Tip on the pre-tax amount?
Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the amount before tax, but many people simply tip on the total for convenience. Enter whichever amount you prefer. If the bill already includes a service charge, you usually don't need to add a full tip on top.
Splitting the bill
Enter the number of people and the calculator divides the total, including the tip, evenly. Turn on round-up to make each share a whole number, which is easier with cash or payment apps. The extra from rounding goes to the server as a slightly bigger tip.
Uneven shares and taxes
If some people ordered more than others, use the split bill calculator to divide by shares. To work out sales tax on a purchase, use the sales tax calculator, and for everyday percentage maths try the percentage calculator.
Tipping for other services
Beyond restaurants, people commonly tip taxi and ride-share drivers around 10–20%, hairdressers and barbers 15–20%, and food delivery drivers a few dollars or 10–15% of the order. Hotel housekeeping is often tipped a small amount per night. When in doubt, follow local custom and check whether a service charge has already been added to the bill. A good tip is also a thank-you, so adjust it up or down for the service you actually received.
