Lakh & Crore to Million & Billion
Convert between lakh/crore and million/billion, with the number written in both systems.
How to use the Lakh ↔ Million
- Enter an amount.
- Choose its unit: thousand, lakh, crore, arab, million, billion or trillion.
- Read it in both systems, with Indian and international comma formats.
Two ways of counting big numbers
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal group large numbers in lakhs and crores, placing commas after the first three digits and then every two (1,00,00,000). Most of the world uses thousands, millions and billions, with commas every three digits (10,000,000). Company results, salaries, startup funding, film collections and news often switch between the two, which is confusing.
Quick reference
| Indian | International |
|---|---|
| 1 lakh | 100 thousand |
| 10 lakh | 1 million |
| 1 crore | 10 million |
| 100 crore (1 arab) | 1 billion |

Examples
- A ₹25 crore funding round = ₹250 million.
- A $5 billion valuation at ₹83 per dollar = ₹41,500 crore (use the currency converter for today’s rate).
- An annual package of ₹18 lakh = ₹1.8 million.
- A country’s GDP of ₹300 lakh crore = ₹300 trillion.
Commas matter
When writing figures for Indian readers (cheques, invoices, government forms), use Indian commas. For international documents, use international commas. The converter shows both. To write the amount in words for cheques, use the number to words converter.
Examples from the news
- “Company raises $100 million”: about ₹830 crore at ₹83 per dollar.
- “Film earns ₹500 crore worldwide”: ₹5 billion.
- “Budget allocation of ₹2.5 lakh crore”: ₹2.5 trillion.
- “Salary package of ₹45 LPA”: ₹4.5 million a year.
Quick answers
What does LPA mean? Lakhs per annum, a common way to state yearly salaries in India. What is a kharab? An old Indian unit equal to 100 arab, or 100 billion. How do I write 1 crore with commas? 1,00,00,000 in the Indian system or 10,000,000 internationally.
Reading big numbers aloud
In India, 1,25,00,000 is read as “one crore twenty-five lakh”. Internationally, the same 12,500,000 is “twelve point five million”. Knowing both makes reading company reports, news and salary offers much easier.
