Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin

India uses Celsius (°C) for weather and cooking. The United States uses Fahrenheit (°F), which is why recipes, fever thermometers and weather apps sometimes show °F. Scientists use Kelvin (K), which starts at absolute zero.

Formulas

  • °F = °C × 9/5 + 32
  • °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
  • K = °C + 273.15

A quick mental shortcut for °C to °F: double it and add 30. This is close for everyday temperatures, but use the converter for exact values, especially for fever and cooking.

Fever readings

Many digital thermometers in India can switch between °C and °F. Doctors often talk in °F (“100 degree fever”), while thermometers may show °C. If you’re unsure, convert here, and consult a doctor for high or persistent fever. This is not medical advice.

Quick answers

What is 40°C in Fahrenheit? 104°F. What is 350°F in Celsius? About 177°C, a common oven setting in recipes, often rounded to 180°C on Indian ovens. At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal? At −40, where both scales show the same number. What is room temperature? About 20–25°C (68–77°F). What is 102°F? About 38.9°C, a moderate fever; consult a doctor if it persists.

Cooking conversions

Many recipes from US websites list oven temperatures in °F. Common settings are 325°F (about 160°C), 350°F (about 180°C), 400°F (about 200°C) and 425°F (about 220°C).

Kelvin never goes below zero, so negative values are only possible in Celsius and Fahrenheit. Absolute zero, 0 K, is the coldest possible temperature.
